Over coffee with a friend, I took a moment to notice the barista’s intricate design on her cappuccino. Personally, I’ve rarely experienced those kinds of presentations, as I prefer my coffee dark and sugar-free—coffee that tastes like coffee. I got used to it that way during my early years studying agricultural engineering, when, after math classes, my professor and I would drink bitter coffee and smoke cigarettes. In a desperate attempt, she tried to teach me derivatives, though my math skills at the time rarely allowed her to succeed. Over the years, I quit smoking, but the dark, sugar-free coffee stayed with me.
However, my friend ordered a cappuccino, and the barista decorated it with little trees and hearts. That made me think about how being a barista is so much more than just serving coffee. A barista is an artisan who masters techniques like latte art, where steamed milk becomes a canvas for creating designs that not only beautify the drink but also reflect dedication and care. This technique doesn’t just show a business that pays attention to details—it also creates a sense of satisfaction for the customer. It’s not just about serving coffee well; it’s about turning a simple cup into a memorable experience. And in the end, that’s what makes the difference: a coffee that not only tastes good but also feels special.
